Home Safety Tips
TIP SHEET-Important Safety Tips for Every Parent,
Grandparent and Caregiver-
1. Remember to always unplug appliances when they are not in use.
Don’t allow your cords to dangle over the edge of the counter.
2. Always follow the 6 inch rule for strings and ribbons-anything
longer is a strangulation hazard for your child.
3. Houseplants should always be kept out of reach.
4. Keep an emergency phone list on all levels of your house next to all
phones. You should include police, fire, poison control, pediatrician and
local hospital numbers on this list.
5. Install carbon monoxide detectors/smoke detectors outside all
bedrooms.
6. Make a fire evacuation plan for your family. Practice this at least
twice a year.
7. If your home was built prior to 1978, have a lead test done.
8. Have a catastrophic emergency plan in place. Where will you
meet? Who will pick up your child? What phone numbers will you use?
9. Check hot water heater-temperature should be below 120 degrees
Fahrenheit.
10. Keep chairs and step stools away from counters and the stove.
